Spring Phenological Sensitivity to Climate Change in the Northern Hemisphere: Comprehensive Evaluation and Driving Force Analysis

چکیده

Plant phenology depends largely on temperature, but temperature alone cannot explain the Northern Hemisphere shifts in start of growing season (SOS). The spatio–temporal distribution SOS sensitivity to climate variability has also changed recent years. We applied partial least squares regression (PLSR) method construct a standardized evaluation index and analyzed combined effects air (Tem), water balance (Wbi), radiation (Srad), previous year’s SOS. spatial temporal distributions change from 1982 2014 were using time windows 33 15 years; dominant biological environmental drivers assessed. results showed that (SCom) is most influenced by preseason sensitivity. However, because asymmetric response daytime/night (Tmax/Tmin) non-negligible moderating Wbi Srad SOS, SCom was more effective expressing effect than any single climatic factor. Vegetation cover (or type) factor influencing pattern sensitivity, followed spring (Tmin > Tmax), weakest balance. Forests had highest absolute values. A significant decrease some vegetation (22.2%) led decreasing trend Hemisphere. Although remains main driving changes SCom, between winter (Tems/Temw). More moisture might mitigate spring/winter warming. adaptation greater influence relative each (Tems, Temw, Wbi, Srad). This study provides basis for assessment prediction.

Do Climate Models Underestimate the Sensitivity of Northern Hemisphere

The sensitivity of Northern Hemisphere sea ice cover to global temperature change is examined in a group of climate models and in the satellite-era observations. The models are found to have well-defined, distinguishable sensitivities in climate change experiments. The satellite-era observations show a larger sensitivity— a larger decline per degree of warming—than any of the models. To evaluat...

Phylogenetic conservatism and trait correlates of spring phenological responses to climate change in northeast China

Climate change has resulted in major changes in plant phenology across the globe that includes leaf-out date and flowering time. The ability of species to respond to climate change, in part, depends on their response to climate as a phenological cue in general. Species that are not phenologically responsive may suffer in the face of continued climate change. Comparative studies of phenology hav...

Community-level phenological response to climate change.

Climate change may disrupt interspecies phenological synchrony, with adverse consequences to ecosystem functioning. We present here a 40-y-long time series on 10,425 dates that were systematically collected in a single Russian locality for 97 plant, 78 bird, 10 herptile, 19 insect, and 9 fungal phenological events, as well as for 77 climatic events related to temperature, precipitation, snow, i...

Northern Hemisphere Ice-Sheet Influences on Global Climate Change

Large ice sheets actively interact with the rest of the climate system by amplifying, pacing, and potentially driving global climate change over several time scales. Direct and indirect influences of ice sheets on climate cause changes in ocean surface temperatures, ocean circulation, continental water balance, vegetation, and landsurface albedo, which in turn cause additional feedbacks in the ...
